about

Written on a borrowed guitar in a hotel in Malta in the summer of 2014, this song was mostly recorded later that autumn, with the drums being added later. I rediscovered it lately sitting in a folder, and think that maybe it has something interesting to say about home and homecoming.

lyrics

"She is coming home tomorrow
Slight and fragile as a bloom
And we must hold her gently
Tread lightly, give her room"
And you are hoping, praying
Seeming solid as a stone
But just beneath the surface
You're frightened and alone

Clematis and the concrete
Stone beneath the green
Flowers on the doorsteps
Things are not quite what they seem
Come cry with me baby
I don't want to be alone
Cry, cry with me baby
I'm sinking like a stone

This time she will be stronger
Just like she was before
The sweetheart that you married
Returned to you once more
And we will gather to her
As much as she allows
We'll tend her back to loving
Be a family somehow

Clematis and the concrete...
